No Rape During War Means Racism?!

Hebrew University Awards Prize for "Research" Claiming
that Jewish Soldiers Do Not Rape Arab Women because Israelis are Racists

by Steven Plaut

I wish I were making this up as some sort of a pre-Purim joke. but it seems that the latest anti-Israel outrage coming out of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem is its awarding a prize to a graduate student for an essay in which the student claims that Israel is abusing and oppressing Palestinians by not raping their women. Really.

azcentral.com: 4 girls found in police raid of prostitution ring

wow. this started to make me wonder about which sporting events would draw mobile prostitution organizations. something else it reminded me of is how certain colleges used to have an unofficial policy of throwing parties and soliciting female students to go to these parties to "accompany" athletes they were recruiting.

School article poorly reports sexual assault

Today the Arizona State University State Press reported about a recent sexual assault. The reporter wrote about the crime in the passive voice.

"ASU police are investigating a sexual assault on a female ASU student that occurred on Alpha Drive early Sunday morning..."

This portrayal of the events takes the pressure off of the suspect. That opening sentence should have looked like this:

"ASU police are investigating a sexual assault, in which a male sexually assaulted a female ASU student."

Notice the change. This is a more honest portrayal of the crime but the reporter and editor failed to write it this way. Unfortunately the media often reports male on female sexual assaults in the passive voice.

NYTimes.com: What's Wrong With Cinderella?

once upon a time, an extraordinarily savvy corporation co-opted a mythology....

read about the construction of the "disney princess" empire here I find it amazing that even though now, we almost naturally equate "princess" with "disney-esque", this wasn't formally created until 2000-2001. (also in the article, the princess-ification of the color pink.) it's also extraordinary that these two aspects are so new and yet so ingrained in us that we can barely remember the world before the marketing.

Paper packaged condoms.

dumb dumb dumb dumb.... DUMB?

WASHINGTON - Who cares if they’re free? Residents in the nation’s capital say the condoms being handed out have a serious problem.

As many as 70,000 condoms given away in a citywide campaign to reduce HIV and AIDS were returned this week by community groups. Another 100,000 condoms were returned in early September because of complaints their paper packaging can be easily damaged and could make the condoms ineffective.

City health officials agreed that complaints about the packaging were damaging to their citywide distribution campaign, but they have insisted the condoms were safe. They said this week they will distribute brand-name substitutes.

NPR: Beating Charges Split Louisiana Town Along Racial Lines

hate is hate. this article illustrates how administrative and systemic ignorance to the infusion of hate into an environment will lead almost inevitably to escalating violence. I see many correlations between the issues of racism this article focuses on and the issues of misogyny that surround violence against women.

of the important points to note, the first is the perspective of the privileged school board. "Our town is not a bunch of bigots. They're Christian, law-abiding citizens that wouldn't mistreat anybody." this is a *crucial* sentiment to learn to address: when someone completely oblivious to their privilege says, "sure, it was a problem in the past. sure, [insert group here] may get the short end of the stick sometime. but, *we're not bigots.*"

the reason i've been upset for the last 24hrs

i read this 1st article and now im upset....
And the second article, is calming me down just a bit...

Evangelist Juanita Bynum is Exploiting her Marital Problems for Personal Gain and Publicity says Rev. Peterson

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 10 /Christian Newswire/ -- Evangelist Juanita Bynum is coming under fire for her public conduct after her domestic abuse incident, where she alleges that her estranged husband, Bishop Thomas Weeks III attacked her. Bynum has since filed for divorce. She's also gone public about the incident calling herself "the new face of domestic violence." Outspoken conservative minister and radio talk show host, Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson is asking: how can Juanita Bynum be the poster child for domestic abuse before we know the truth about her role in this altercation?

No hate crime charges in torture case
Sept. 12: Federal prosecutors say they will not seek hate crime charges against six people charged with the abduction, assault and torture of a West Virginia woman. NBC's Pete Williams reports.
MSNBC

BIG CREEK, W.Va. - Six white suspects accused of torturing a young black woman for days in West Virginia will not face federal hate crime charges, Justice Department officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

At one point, an assailant cut the woman’s ankle with a knife and used the N-word in telling her she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaints.

The Justice Department said it will defer to West Virginia in prosecuting the six suspects.

Logan County Prosecutor Brian Abraham said his office would pursue other charges first because they carry stiffer penalties. West Virginia’s hate crime law carries a sentence of up to 10 years.
