Reflections on the meaning of the Campus Pond incidents

by Sut Jhally & Jackson Katz ’82

EDITOR'S NOTE: In the print edition of this faculty essay in the Winter 2001 issue, the headline refers to "the Campus Pond rapes" of 1999. As the text of the essay indicates, the incidents in question were reported attacks, and not all were reports of rape. We apologize for any confusion created by this reference.

No Rape During War Means Racism?!

Hebrew University Awards Prize for "Research" Claiming
that Jewish Soldiers Do Not Rape Arab Women because Israelis are Racists

by Steven Plaut

I wish I were making this up as some sort of a pre-Purim joke. but it seems that the latest anti-Israel outrage coming out of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem is its awarding a prize to a graduate student for an essay in which the student claims that Israel is abusing and oppressing Palestinians by not raping their women. Really.

azcentral.com: 4 girls found in police raid of prostitution ring

wow. this started to make me wonder about which sporting events would draw mobile prostitution organizations. something else it reminded me of is how certain colleges used to have an unofficial policy of throwing parties and soliciting female students to go to these parties to "accompany" athletes they were recruiting.

School article poorly reports sexual assault

Today the Arizona State University State Press reported about a recent sexual assault. The reporter wrote about the crime in the passive voice.

"ASU police are investigating a sexual assault on a female ASU student that occurred on Alpha Drive early Sunday morning..."

This portrayal of the events takes the pressure off of the suspect. That opening sentence should have looked like this:

"ASU police are investigating a sexual assault, in which a male sexually assaulted a female ASU student."

Notice the change. This is a more honest portrayal of the crime but the reporter and editor failed to write it this way. Unfortunately the media often reports male on female sexual assaults in the passive voice.

Rape case overshadows PR blitz:

wow, take a look at this.... it's not surprising though because of their strict laws, but c'mon!

discussion tactics from gail stern

hot off the presses. these notes were gleaned from two workshops put on by gail stern at the safe zone society national conference on sexual assault in our schools. during the workshops, we basically outlined an example objective of wanting to explain consent. we expanded on the characteristics of consent, then made a huge list of the most common responses to each item. there were fewer responses toward the end because of time constraints, but here's how it went:

difficult conversations

I'm hearing that many friends and colleagues are finding themselves in the position of having difficult conversations regarding social justice. the people we are talking to are reacting aggressively and unexpectedly. people who are normally capable of conversation are resorting to tactics they saw on the o'reilly factor when confronted with issues of sexism or racism. the discussions are quickly devolving into the adult equivalent of plugging our ears and yelling "la-la-la".

in this forum, I hope people will present and discuss difficult counterpoints, perspectives and scenarios, as well as, general tactics for keeping discussions somewhat productive.... if not productive, at least contained in a fashion that keeps us from snapping and telling people they resemble hitler.

NYTimes.com: What's Wrong With Cinderella?

once upon a time, an extraordinarily savvy corporation co-opted a mythology....

read about the construction of the "disney princess" empire here I find it amazing that even though now, we almost naturally equate "princess" with "disney-esque", this wasn't formally created until 2000-2001. (also in the article, the princess-ification of the color pink.) it's also extraordinary that these two aspects are so new and yet so ingrained in us that we can barely remember the world before the marketing.

Paper packaged condoms.

dumb dumb dumb dumb.... DUMB?

WASHINGTON - Who cares if they’re free? Residents in the nation’s capital say the condoms being handed out have a serious problem.

As many as 70,000 condoms given away in a citywide campaign to reduce HIV and AIDS were returned this week by community groups. Another 100,000 condoms were returned in early September because of complaints their paper packaging can be easily damaged and could make the condoms ineffective.

City health officials agreed that complaints about the packaging were damaging to their citywide distribution campaign, but they have insisted the condoms were safe. They said this week they will distribute brand-name substitutes.
